Areal3 – Três Gerações de Cor

Group exhibition
8th of June until the 3rd of August 2024, in Centro Cultural de Lagos, Lagos, Portugal.

Artists: António Areal, Sofia Areal and Martim Brion

This exhibition is a confluence of three different approaches to colour, line, subject, and ultimately art. The only connection is a familial one. Or is it? The influence is clear; there is a biological connection, and on top of this, there is an artistic weight. On this weight there is a compounded effect. Sofia Areal grew up, among other influences, around her father’s art and artistic process; Martim Brion grew up among his grandfather’s and mother’s work and accompanying her mother’s artistic process. One could say Brion has gotten the best piece of the pie, and there is something to this, but one can argue that it is just different, a different reality. Hence, we have three different realities: two living ones and a legacy one. These confluent realities are what this exhibition is about. How these three artists look at the world, projecting and rendering this world in their work, through various media; painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, writing, ceramics, textiles, the list goes on.

We hope that this exhibition presenting a view of these three generations of artists of the same family, an uncommon case, is something that provides a fourth distinct perspective, that of the viewer, which might be familiar with some of the work or artists presented but not all and probably less so with their connections and disconnections.
